Details & measurements

A finely made British costume brooch in the form of a lizard, pavé-set with clear crystals and finished with a single vivid red crystal eye. The body is outlined in polished silver-tone metal, with a gently arched back, four sculpted feet and a raised, curving tail. A pin fastening runs beneath the body, and the reverse is stamped A&S.

Pieces of this type were made in the 1980s, when Attwood & Sawyer’s animal brooches were at their most collectible. The setting is dense and even, the metalwork is crisp, and the stones are bright — the kind of finish that set the firm apart from ordinary costume jewellery and still makes these brooches sought after.

Attwood & Sawyer was founded in 1956 in Porthcawl, Wales, by Horace Attwood and Mr Sawyer, and worked from premises near Bordeaux 12.

The company built its name on high-quality plated metal, Swarovski crystals and designs often drawn from historic jewels, including pieces inspired by the Duchess of Windsor.

Their brooches were sold through leading retailers, among them Harrods. Lady Diana Spencer was a noted customer there before her marriage, and Attwood & Sawyer remains closely associated with that Harrods clientele.

The firm later supplied jewellery seen in Dallas and Dynasty.
